Intra-school competitions
St Thomas' are restarting the House Competition this year, with the Sports Leaders running the activities at break and lunch times. The emphasis is on pupils enjoying their participation in physical activity and setting themselves personal challenges.
Upon arrival at St Thomas', Year 3 pupils are alphabetically allocated into one of four houses, each of which are named after bishoprics of the Church of England: Canterbury (Blue), Durham (Yellow), Winchester (Green) and York (Red). Pupils remain in that house for the rest of their time at St Thomas', and work together with pupils from other years to try and earn the most house points in order to win the various challenges.
Trophies are awarded to the house with the most pupils participating, as the competitions are all about taking part in a physical activity and challenging yourself to do better.
The data below comes from the PESSPA pupil survey. From a total of 212 responses, 40.1% of pupils indicated that they had participated in a House Competition. Now that the whole school are having break and lunch at the same time, it is easier to organise the House Competition and this should be reflected in higher levels of participation this year. With regular changes to the activities on offer, Sports Leaders hosting the activities during both break times and lunch times and a raised profile of the House Competition via displays, assemblies, and newsletters, we are aiming for 100% participation by the end of this year.
House Competition #1 (2nd - 13th October): Putting
To celebrate the biennial golf competitions hosted this week between Europe and the USA - the ladies' Solheim Cup and the mens' Ryder Cup - the first House Competition of the new academic year will be a golf putting competition. Who will take inspiration from Spain's Carlota Ciganda and help their team to victory?
